Topaz and Kealoha at the Superyacht Cup Palma

The Superyacht Cup Palma featured some great racing in three classes with beautiful light moderate conditions and blue skies. Two yachts designed by our office took part, the J Class yacht Superyacht Cup Palma 2019 J8 in Class B and the Truly Classic 90 Kealoha in Class C.

In Class B it was game on between the two Js Topaz and Velsheda. Our office was closely involved in optimising Topaz based on hands-on experience on board with a professional race crew under command of America’s Cup veteran Peter Holmberg. The hard work paid off and Topaz came out of the yard faster upwind and downwind.

Velsheda, with over 20 years of experience and almost always the same crew, is a tough competitor. She won the first race with 15 seconds corrected time, while the second was won by Topaz in corrected. The third race saw a big battle with both yachts in front several times. A winch problem in the last beat cost Topaz the lead but she fought back downwind to finish ahead of Velsheda and win the Class overall (and come very close to winning the overall event).

Kealoha raced in Class C with a non-pro crew and was up against two other well-sailed yachts. In the first race Kealoha ended third, 7 minutes and 37 seconds behind her rivals. She then came second in races two and three, making her just third overall – still a fine achievement for a yacht only being raced for the second time in her 11 years.

Topaz won the annual Hoek Design Cup as best performing yacht designed by our office. This is the tenth year we have awarded this prize during the Palma superyacht event.
