Les Voiles de St Tropez was a success again this year

10 October 2018

The final event of the Mediterranean season, Les Voiles de St Tropez was a success again this year, showing Hoek-designed yachts to their full advantage.

The Voiles is an action-packed event and the largest sail regatta in the world for classic yachts. It provides a stage for vessels to demonstrate a spirit of tradition as more than 300 yachts gather in St Tropez in early autumn.

This year’s programme of fierce racing saw four,  Hoek Design yachts participating over three different classes, and displaying a wide spread of Hoek Design features.

In the Spirit of Tradition class, the PC66 design, Sultana took to the water in her maiden regatta, complete with a brand new wardrobe of North Sails’ sails.

The new all carbon 66 Pilot Classic design showed great speed, winning much admiration as she secured second place in her class and lots of admiration - an impressive feat fresh from her launch this summer. Sultana is the second PC66 built to a Hoek design; a second PC55 is presently under construction.

The PC66 was designed as a performance-oriented yacht with a useful open cockpit adding to her functionality in a regatta. Hoek Design’s Ruurt Meulemans was onboard Sultana to see the performance of the vessel, designed with a low-profile wraparound glass superstructure that creates a very light and open feeling.

Racing alongside Sultana was the 108ft Truly Classic, Eugenia. Both vessels garnered plenty of attention as modern classics amongst the original classic yachts, with the beautiful lines of both vessels creating an impression.

Off the course, Sultana also proved her popularity. Such was her prominence during events and parties around the regatta, her aft platform was renamed ‘the dancefloor’.

Another newcomer in St Tropez was the brand new Eagle 54 Paradis, the third yacht to this design built by Leonardo Yachts. Paradis put in a sparkling performance winning the last race day and showing great performance in a very competitive field of Spirit of Tradition yachts. Have a look at a video here.

Watching J Class yachts race is a highlight of any regatta they participate in and 2018’s Les Voiles de St Tropez was no different. Hoek Design, and Holland Jachtbouw-built Topaz once again displayed fierce competitive skill and style on the course, in the final regatta of the J Class season.

The J Class racing of the regatta turned into a duel between Topaz and Velsheda as they competed within the Modern IRC A fleet against 21 of the world’s top contemporary Supermaxi, Maxi and Mini Maxi yachts. With Hoek Design’s naval architect Vittorio Papa onboard, Topaz triumphed over Velsheda, securing ninth place in the Modern IRC A fleet over Velsheda’s 13th place.
