Owner-built Pilot Classic 37 Josephine III launched in Holland

The Pilot Classic 37 Josephine III has been officially launched in a christening ceremony in the Netherlands. This new design is the third Hoek Design yacht to have been built by the owner himself, following on from a Truly Classic 51 in 1996 and a full carbon daysailer in 2006. “It is always good to maintain close relations and work with repeat clients,” says Andre Hoek. “The owner of Josephine III wanted a weekender with a little more interior and lots of wooden craftsmanship… And we were happy to oblige!”

The Pilot Classic 37 has a traditional plumb bow and bowsprit with a beautiful long aft overhang with an open transom that echoes the Pilot Cutters of the early 1900s. The classic wooden details on deck are combined with a modern performance offered by a deep T bulb fin keel and spade rudder. The tall rig ensures good performances in light winds while the stability of the bulb keel gives comfortable heel angles when the wind picks up.

Josephine III has an exceptionally large cockpit for a yacht of her size and feels more like 50 feet than 37. Ease of sail handling is achieved by having all control lines led below decks to the cockpit close to the helmsman. A large top down furling gennaker or code 0 can be set from the bowsprit. 

“The design of this weekender is quite popular and within reach of a sailing clientele that appreciate classic looks combined with performance and a luxurious feel,” adds Andre Hoek. “A second Pilot Classic 37 is currently under construction at a shipyard in the UK and we have received various other serious inquiries at our office. The fact that we can offer a variety of options to prospective owners adds to the appeal.”

Although Josephine III and the second Pilot Classic 37 have been built in cedar core with epoxy laminates, the boat can also be built in a composite construction. The current interior layouts include a double bed on the forward section of the boat, a full beam U-shaped settee that is also large enough to sleep on, a small galley to port, an enclosed head & shower to starboard and another berth port aft. This layout can, however, be customised to any client requirements such is the flexibility of this impressive Hoek Design concept.
